Bird Picnic

A great event delivered by Marina from Durham Wildlife Trust. We found out more about how you can identify birds and had a go at creating some yummy treats for the birds in our gardens.
This was a free event which is part of a programme of community events that have been funded by Growing a Greener Britain Grants Fund.

Bird Ringing Success!

We’ve had a great morning with members of Northumbria Ringing group as they rung a number of different species including Blue Tit, Great Tit, Long Tailed Tit, Robin, Blackbird and Dipper. Ringing birds is essential if we are to learn about how long they live and when and where they move, questions that are vital for bird conservation. Placing a lightweight, uniquely numbered, metal ring around a bird’s leg provides a reliable and harmless method of identifying birds as individuals. It also gave us a chance to see these beautiful creatures up close. Many thanks to Growing a Greener Britain Grants fund who provided the funding for this free event.

Fun Day 2017

An amazing Fun Day was had this year, with the weather just about holding together for another great free Tanfield Lea event organised by TLC and hosted at the Working Men’s Club. Bouncy castles, face painting, competitions, stalls galore! Thank you to everyone who donated to our group!

Stream Dipping 2017

We had an amazing turnout today for the stream dipping event! Monsters, mud and creatures that lurk! Many thanks to Durham Wildlife Trust for helping us to see what creatures live in the stream in Harperley Woods. Also thanks to Stanley Town Council for funding the activity.

42 bags of rubbish collected!

Many thanks to the 16 volunteers who turned out this morning to pick 42 bags of litter from Tanfield Lea and Harperley Woods. We found gas canisters, a toilet seat, a roller blind, a fan, bags of vegetable peelings, McDonald’s food and drink cartons and some lost property (handed in to the Police Station). Thanks to Clive for picking 30 bags out of the woods earlier this week! Thanks also to the new ladies hair salon situated in the club car park for the very welcome teas and coffees afterwards!
